Can your website pass the five-second test?

Your website may look polished, but that does not automatically make it effective. When somebody arrives on the homepage, they are usually trying to decide whether they are in the right place. If the answer is not obvious, they may leave before they discover how good your business is.

Woman looking at her website to ensure it's no only polished but that it works to drive visitors to find out more.

A visitor should not have to study your homepage. In five seconds, they should understand what you offer, who it is for and what they should do next.

The five-second test is a simple way to check the first impression your website creates. Show your homepage to somebody who is not closely involved with the business. After five seconds, hide the page and ask what the company does, who it helps and what they thought they should do next. Their answers will reveal whether the page communicates quickly enough.

First, visitors need to understand what you offer. Use a plain headline that describes the service or result. A vague line about passion, excellence or changing the future may sound impressive, but it makes the visitor work too hard.

Next, make it clear who the service is for. Visitors should recognise themselves in the wording. This could be stated through a sector, location, business type or problem. Specific language helps the right people feel that the page was written for them.

Finally, tell people what they should do next. Make the main action easy to find and easy to understand. ‘Book a consultation’ or ‘Request a free audit’ gives far more direction than ‘Learn more’.

A crowded opening section can weaken even good copy. Too many menu items, competing buttons, moving graphics or lengthy introductory paragraphs force the visitor to make choices before they understand the offer. Give the main message room to breathe.

Check the mobile version as carefully as the desktop page. The headline should remain readable, the main button should appear without excessive scrolling and the most important information should not be pushed down by a large image.

Ask several people who resemble your prospective clients to try the test. Do not explain the page first. Record the words they use and note where their answers differ from what you intended. If they cannot explain the offer, rewrite the headline and supporting sentence. If they understand the business but do not know what to do, strengthen the call to action.

The aim is not to tell the visitor everything immediately. It is to give them enough confidence and interest to continue. A clear first impression creates the space for the rest of the website to do its job.

Take action:

Show your homepage to three people for five seconds. Ask them what your business offers, who it helps and what they should do next. If their answers are unclear or inconsistent, begin by improving your headline and main call to action.
